PAWS Newcastle

It is a concern many families quietly carry when caring for an ageing or unwell pet.

While most families contact us to arrange an at-home euthanasia appointment, there are occasions when a beloved pet passes away before we arrive. If this happens, it can feel overwhelming and leave families unsure of what to do next.

The first thing to know is that you do not need to panic.

Take a Moment With Your Pet

Many families find comfort in spending some quiet time with their pet after they have passed. There is no need to rush.

You may wish to sit with them, say goodbye, involve family members or simply take a moment to reflect on the life and memories you shared together.

Every family grieves differently and there is no right or wrong way to approach this time.

What Should I Do Next?

If your pet passes away before our appointment, we encourage you to contact us as soon as you are able. We can guide you through the next steps and discuss the options available to you.

Depending on your wishes, we can assist with respectful collection and transport of your pet, along with aftercare arrangements through one of our trusted cremation partners. For more information, visit our FAQs.

Can PAWS Newcastle Still Help?

Of course. Even if your pet passes away naturally before we arrive, we can still assist with collection and aftercare arrangements.

If immediate transport to cremation centres is not available, we can also discuss temporary care options to ensure your pet remains safe and treated with dignity until arrangements can be made.

Our goal is to support families through every stage of this journey, including when circumstances change unexpectedly.

Aftercare and Cremation Options

We work closely with trusted cremation providers throughout the region and can help facilitate transport and aftercare arrangements on your behalf.

The cremation provider will then contact you directly to discuss your preferences, including private or communal cremation and the return of your pet’s ashes if requested.

This allows families the time and space to focus on what matters most during an emotional period.
